Plastic in the sea
Impact on the animal world
Many animals mistake pieces of plastic for food. Birds, for example, eat the caps of PET bottles, fire lighters or various plastic fragments. The photographer and film maker Chris Jordan focuses on this phenomenon in his series Midway: Message from the Gyre (since 2009). His impressive and alarming pictures show albatrosses from the Hawaiian Midway Atoll who died due to the plastic in their stomachs. However, this is just one of the ways in which plastic garbage threatens marine animals.
